Truffles Bakery, Uckfield Sausage Roll Review

Sausage Roll from Truffles Bakery Uckfield

About Truffles Bakery, Uckfield

Truffles Bakery, Uckfield was a welcome sight on a rainy Saturday. After a morning spent shopping, I felt tired and in need of somewhere to sit and recover. Being unfamiliar with Uckfield, I’d walked a while in the rain, looking for a sandwich shop but was relieved to spot a branch of Truffles.

Now, I knew all about their sausage rolls, having previously visited their branch on George Street in Hove. Just like in Hove, the welcome was warm and the pastry appropriately priced. As I sat there, a steady stream of weary shoppers wondered in and out, buying bread and baked goods and I asked myself how many of these people had volunteered to brave the shops, to sneak a secret sausage roll.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were a welcomed sight after the rain outside. As with the rest of the pastry, the rolls were kept warm inside a glass case and I fought with myself not to take a steak bake for the road.

7/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£2 felt like a fair price for the sausage roll. The vegetarian varieties were pricier, as too were the steak bakes.

8/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

I ate in the shop and the sausage roll was served on a plate with cutlery. This was a nice change, as I usually eat on the move.

8/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The sausage roll was well proportioned and had a decent weight. It was a classic tube shape, not like the squat ones that they sell at Gail’s and other fancier places.

6/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

The pastry arrived warm and ready to eat but as I tucked in, a fresher batch of sausage rolls were brought out from the back of the shop.

7/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry had dried out slightly but it was perfectly passable. It could have been flakier but I’ve had far worse.

6/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The filling was pink, smooth and porky. There was more pastry than meat but it was as expected.

6/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

Classic pork flavours. I would have liked more pepper but that’s always the case.

7/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

As a pit stop during Saturday shopping, this place was perfectly acceptable. The shop had a good atmosphere and I didn’t leave hungry.

8/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus points for the amount of sausage rolls that got sold during the time I was in there and for the best Yum Yum I’ve had in years.
