The Garden Café sausage roll review

The Garden Café sausage roll

About The Garden Café

The Garden Café is a certified sausage roll seller, situated in St Ann’s Well Garden in Hove. This small but pristine park is surrounded by a 1930s red brick estate, distinct from the grander architecture of Brunswick Square and the seafront. St Ann’s isn’t huge but benefits from well maintained toilets, immaculate tennis courts, trees full of birds and locals walking their dogs. From the park it’s a ten minute walk to the sea but this walk can feel longer after scoffing a sausage roll.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

I didn’t get to see the sausage roll before purchase but their presence were advertised on chalkboards beside the till. When I got it home I was impressed by the rustic look of the snack.

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£3.50 felt like a fair price for a big lump of meat and pastry.

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

The sausage roll came packaged on a paper plate and wrapped in a brown bag. The addition of a napkin inside the bag was a nice touch.

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

This sausage roll was a hefty beast and proved a formidable snack. After eating it I slid into an afternoon slump.

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

The server offered to warm it up for me and by the time it arrived home it was the perfect temperature.

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry was sweet and flaky but unfortunately, the blast in microwave had stuck the base to the plate.

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The meat was coarsely ground and of a fair quality but it had become slightly dry in the microwave.

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

Flavour wise, I found the the sausage roll a little sweet and in need of seasoning. Wholegrain mustard was mixed in with the meat but I would have preferred the heat of English.

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I didn’t have high expectations but was pleasantly surprised by my visit.

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

The friendliness of the staff and the the surrounding greenery were deserving of bonus points.
