The Sussex Peasant Sausage Roll Review

The Sussex Peasant sausage roll

The Sussex Peasant is farm shop that pitches up in parks around Brighton and beyond. They sell a wide array of delicious produce, the kind that makes you feel good for shopping locally. I had no intention of eating a sausage roll today but felt the urge, as I pushed my young son around the park in his pram. My desire to walk was spurred on in part by a hangover and also by the results of a BMI calculation that told me I’m overweight.

‘How much is this down to tiredness,’ I thought, ‘and how much is it the fault of pork and pastry?’

Diet and exercise begin tomorrow.

St Ann’s Well Gardens, Nizells Avenue, Hove

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were lovingly displayed on tables, placed under trees in the park. There was a wide array of breads, meats, cheese and juices available too.

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

Along with the sausage roll, I bought some bagels and a can of sparkling apple juice. The whole lot came to £7.10, which felt fairly standard for Hove but outrageous for other parts of the country.

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

Classic brown paper bags were provided. The packaging was nothing fancy but the sausage roll wasn’t travelling far.

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The roll was somewhat squat and had a good deal of heft.

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

The sausage roll was cold but I gave it ten minutes in the oven and it warmed up nicely. Heating it up added some extra colour and this was warranted as the sausage roll looked a little pale when I bought it.

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

Very buttery and flaky pastry, there was real depth of flavour here.

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The meat was excellent, not too coarsely ground and full of flavour. The meat held together throughout eating and didn’t fall apart. This was a top filling.

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

The flavour was excellent, simple and wholesome. The mustard didn’t overpower the pork, which I especially liked.

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was left satisfied, surprise sausage rolls are my favourite.

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus points for the friendly staff and the outdoor setting, it felt Covid safe and inviting.
