Sugardough Hove sausage roll review

Sugardough sausage roll

About Sugardough

Sugardough is a bakery and café situated close to Hove seafront. A few doors down is an excellent Italian deli and in the opposite direction an old man pub and a chip shop. The window displays at Sugardough often catch the attention of passers by. The baked goods are neatly stacked on trays and the prices are written on small chalkboards. It’s best to go early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the queues as customers waiting for coffee can slow down the service. As well as sausage rolls, Sugardough serve excellent croissants and cakes. I bought my wedding cake came from here.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls at Sugardough score high for appearances. They are freshly baked and stacked up neatly on trays in a kind of wooden frame. From the door you can see them. I like the little labels for the sausage rolls, they are written on chalkboards signs and add to the charm of the place.

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£2.75 felt a little steep when considering the size of the sausage roll. This was not a meal, more a snack.

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

A classic brown paper bag with the addition of tape for ease of transport. There was good grease transfer from the roll to the bag and it arrived home intact.

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

This was a snack designed more for flavour than heft. It wasn’t as dense as I would have liked.

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

Pretty chilly, the roll needed heating in the oven when I got home.

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

Although cold, the pastry was thick, buttery and flavoursome. It held together throughout eating.

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

I could see vegetables inside and there was a lot of meat. The quality of meat was far better than a standard sausage rolls.
