About Real Pâtisserie

RealPâtisserie on Western Road in Hove is a short walk from my flat but wouldn’t look out of place in Highgate or Islington. Back when I used to rent a room in Tottenham, I would travel to the fancier parts of north London on the weekends and pretend that I’d one day be able to afford to live there. These days,RealPâtisserie is a regular stop on my weekend rounds, when I’m in need of bread, a tart or a sausage roll. Not only is their produce fresh but their service is excellent and visiting makes me happy, even when I have to queue to get inside.

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were proudly displayed in a glass case.

£2.50. A reasonable price for a top quality baked good.

The sausage roll was handed over in small plastic bag that was satisfying to scrunch up afterwards.

It was pretty dense and reassuring to hold.

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

It was cold and on this occasion and there was no offer of heating.

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry was excellent and packed tightly around the filling. There was a small amount of flaking on top and a deep buttery flavour.

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

Top filling, wonderfully substantial.

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

This was a pork and apple sausage roll, which was a nice deviation from the classic flavours. The apple was delicious and the pastry had a fantastic golden sheen.

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

This felt like a very wholesome and clean sausage roll. The apple counted towards my five a day.
