Pork and Mustard Sausage Roll Review

Pork and mustard sausage roll from Canham and Sons

About The Pork and Mustard Sausage Roll

The best things in life are unexpected and so it was with the pork and mustard sausage roll that I bought from Canham and Sons. Now, I’m no stranger to this purveyor of pastry. Canham and Sons is a regular stop on my weekday walks but I tend to avoid it on Saturdays, for fear of the queues.

I hadn’t left the flat this Saturday specifically looking for baked goods. I’d been to an underwhelming festive market and needed to something to warm me after walking by the sea. When I arrived at Canham and Sons, the sausage rolls were being transferred from a baking tray to the window display. I held the still warm sausage roll after paying and laughed at the thought that a ‘Hove Hand Warmer’ sounded more like an obscure sex act than a way of describing my late lunch.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

They have glorious window displays at Canham and Sons and my timing was perfect as the sausage rolls were still steaming.

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£2.50, an absolute steal.

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

A classic paper and plastic bag. There was some some grease transfer but nothing too great to put me off. I kept the sausage roll in my jacket pocket on the walk home and enjoyed wafts of delicious scent.

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

There was decent density to it and knew from past experience that one was enough to satisfy.

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

It was oven fresh when served and by the time I got it home, it had cooled to the perfect temperature.

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

Buttery and flaky. The addition of Poppy Seeds on top was a nice touch.

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The meat was well ground and had retained good moisture. I found that it offered some resistance as I chewed.

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

Excellent flavour. This time out, I had a pork and mustard sausage roll and the mustard gave the snack a good bit of warmth.

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was satisfied but left rather thirsty.

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus point for the friendly staff and the lack of queue.
