Homemade sausage roll review

Homemade sausage rolls cooling down

About The Homemade Sausage Roll

It’s been a long year and at times recently, I felt as if I were limping towards Christmas, desperate for a break and for time to do nothing. Christmas is the season of giving and as such, I thought that I’d treat myself to an experiment in pork and pastry. It’s oft been said that effort can get you a long way in life but this experiment reinforced the knowledge that some skill is required also.

For this attempt at home baking, I took my inspiration from this recipe by Gill Meller, and this brilliant tutorial.

It seems for now, I shan’t be quitting the day job.

Address

A flat in Hove that smells of sausages.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls had a nice rustic look to them but the pastry hadn’t puffed and flaked as I’d hoped. I felt some trepidation when going in for the first bite.

6/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£3 for 500g of sausage mince from Rogman Butchers felt like a bargain. I had plain flour, butter and eggs in the flat.

7/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

No packaging to speak of but the roll retained its structural integrity as I ate,

5/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The rolls had decent weight and density, due to the amount of sausage meat that I’d packed into them.

7/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

Oven fresh.

10/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry wasn’t great. This was a first attempt but I shan’t be retraining as a pastry chef anytime soon.

1/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

Top quality filling, delicious texture and no gristle.

9/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

I didn’t ask what Rogman put in their sausage mince but all the classic flavours of pork, pepper and Sage were present.

9/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was a little underwhelmed.

4/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus points for enthusiasm.

5/10
