Greggs sausage roll review

Greggs Sausage Roll

About gREGGS

Everyone’s been to Greggs. They’re a safe and predictable feature of most high streets and deliver big flavour for small cash. I’m fond of them because they’re familiar. Greggs have saved me from awful hangovers and from fast approaching fits of hanger. The sausage rolls are perfectly passable and I’m equally fond of both their steak bakes and their yum yums. My nearest Greggs is on Western Road, a busy part of town, just past where Hove turns into Brighton. That stretch of street is home to all the shops that you’d expect to see in a town centre and the air is thick with the fumes from buses and from the delivery drivers that park their scooters out front of McDonald’s.

Like most branches of Greggs, this one was busy with a diverse mix of customers. There wasn’t space to eat inside and so after I bought my sausage roll, I headed back up the hill back towards Hove. I was careful before taking my first bite as the town centre seagulls are known to swoop.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

A pile of the greasy rascals were waiting for collection. Prices were displayed, which I always like.

9/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£1. They must have had an offer on as they are usually £1.20. No complaints though.

10/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

Classic branded paper bag with minimal grease transfer.

7/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

Not like the chubby chaps from the fancy bakeries around Hove but the weight was hinting at something scrumptious.

5/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

Middle of the road warmth. I would have liked it warmer but I couldn’t wait until I got home.

5/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

I would like a more buttery pastry but for the price it was perfectly passable.

7/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

It was once meat but it had that sort of grey hue that you get from cheap sausage meat.

4/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

Classic sausage flavours. Nothing fancy but it’s tried and tested.

7/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was satisfied in the moment but hungry again by the time I got home.

6/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Always friendly and efficient service. I have to commend them for selling yum yums too, another classic baked good that I’d fond of.
