About Granier bakery Cafe

Granier Bakery Cafe is situated near the centre of Brighton, on a busy part of Western Road. Immediately outside of the shop is a bus stop and to capture the passing trade, the bakery display their baked goods in the window. As well as sausage rolls, the shop sells cakes, drinks and a wide array of snacks. It’s the kind of place that is easy to walk past.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were proudly displayed in the window and caught my attention as I walked home from Brighton.

7/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£2.50 for a larger than average sausage roll. It was long and thin, unlike the squat and chunky upmarket varieties.

7/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

It was handed over in a striped paper bag and gave good grease transfer. The packaging was a highlight.

9/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The sausage roll lacked weight and I had immediate concerns about the meat to pastry ratio.

4/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

I was offered it warmed and that is always a nice touch but a quick blast in the microwave made me fear for the integrity of the pastry. By the time I got it to the beach, the sausage roll was stone cold.

5/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

Quite dry and lacking flavour, this wasn’t a fresh one. I suspect it was at least a day old.

3/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

A thin tube of meat through the middle of the pastry. The pastry to pork ration was about 70/30 in favour of pastry. I was mostly chewing air.

2/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

The meat had that pale grey flavour that is common in cheap sausage rolls and lacked any distinguishable flavour.

2/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

Overall, pretty disappointing.

2/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus points for the polite service and the abundance of napkins that it can with.

6/10
