Flint Owl Bakery Sausage Roll Review

Flint Owl Bakery sausage roll

About flINT oWL bAKERY

Sometimes, decisions get taken out of your hands and you’re forced to act. Today was such a day. I was walking around Brighton when the rain began to fall. Thankfully, the Flint Owl Bakery was beside me and so I went inside for coffee. I hadn’t planned to eat a sausage roll today but the baked goods looked appealing, waiting expectantly in their display case. It’s important in life to try and make the best of any situation. When rain starts falling, pastry comes calling.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were nicely displayed and caught my attention as I walked inside the shop. Prices were written on tiny chalk boards beside the baked goods.

8/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£3.50 felt steep for a somewhat petite sausage roll but such prices are common in the centre of Brighton.

7/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

The sausage roll came served on a plate with napkins. I could have done with a fork but the staff were busy and so I didn’t ask.

8/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

Pretty dense.

7/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

The roll was offered heated up but it could have done with a little longer in the oven. Whilst the chill had been taken off the pastry, the meat remained cold in the middle.

7/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

Tasty pastry, both buttery and flaky and I liked the addition of the seeds on top.

8/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The filling was meaty but it wasn’t the most moist. This could have been a day old roll.

7/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

I felt that the roll was under seasoned. It needed a good hit of black pepper and would have benefitted from some mustard or relish.

7/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

As a place to hide from the rain, this was a great spot. I enjoyed watching the people pass by as I tucked into the pastry.

7/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

They served delicious cheesecake and excellent espresso. I’d go again if I were passing by.
