Critchlows Farm Shop sausage roll review

Critchlows Farm Shop sausage roll

About critchlows

Critchlows Farm Shop is a butcher and baker in the Derbyshire town of Bakewell. They supply sausage rolls to the Grindleford Community Shop, where this particular sausage roll was purchased. The quality of produce and competitive prices at Critchlows made me marvel at the north of England. If in Hove, this sausage roll would easily have been double the price.

Address

1 Bridge St, Bakewell DE45 1DS

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were proudly displayed in a small case by the till, placed there to tempt the casual shopper. There wasn’t another shop close by and I suspected that the Community Shop does a roaring pastry trade.

8/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£1.50, which I found impressively cheap for a baked snack of impeccable quality.

10/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

A classic paper and plastic bag, the same kind they use at Canham & Sons.

7/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The sausage roll had a reassuring weight and holding it hinted at the deliciousness to come.

8/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

I ate the sausage roll as an accompaniment to dinner. It was cold when handed over but I gave it a quick blast in the microwave. Normally I’d worry about the microwave compromising the integrity of the pastry but my fears proved unfounded.

4/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry had a lovely golden sheen and surrounded the sausage meat perfectly. I found the ratio of pork to pastry optimal and liked that there was pastry to spare.

9/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The filling was smoothly ground and the meat a nice pink colour. No gristle was encountered.

8/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

Classic sausage meat flavours and a healthy amount of seasoning. Personal preference but I’d have liked more pepper.

8/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was very satisfied, the price alone was astounding but the quality of the meat and pastry were excellent.

8/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus points awarded for being an exceptional all round sausage roll.
