The Cornish Bakery Sausage Roll Review

The Cornish Bakery Sausage Roll

About the Cornish Bakery

The Cornish Bakery is nestled in the small seaside town of West Bay in Devon. It was a welcomed sight at the halfway point of a long walk from Beer and back. The walk had taken us along cliffs in oppressive heat and a sausage roll was sorely needed to recover salts and spirits.

There was a queue of tourists outside the entrance but the service was efficient and friendly. They had several varieties of pasties on offer but it was the classic sausage roll that caught my eye.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls had pride of place inside a heated cabinet that served as a counter. The queue outside the door made me have high hopes.

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£2.50, which felt fair for a tourist trap in a seaside town.

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

Nice branded bag, classic paper with minimal grease transfer.

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The sausage roll had a good weight. Leaving the shop I was paranoid about passing seagulls but managed to transport it to the beach without being accosted.

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

This sausage roll had retained good warmth. It was the perfect temperature for immediate snaffling.

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

Not the flakiest pastry but not too dry. It had some flavour and a bit of bite. Slightly above average.

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

Classic sausage roll filling. Inside the pastry was a grey tube of meat of questionable provenance. I did find one large piece of gristle but it was otherwise an enjoyable eat.

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

Classic sausage roll flavours. A little under seasoned and not trying to do anything fancy.

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was left satisfied and was pleased to escape the town soon after. The sausage roll gave me plenty of energy for the walk back to Beer.

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

The staff were all friendly and smiling. That always makes a difference to the overall experience.
