About Castles of Kemptown
This morning, after an appointment at the hospital, I couldn’t resist returning to Castles of Kemptown, the site of my top rated sausage roll. I was delighted to discover that alongside their usual treats, Castles had rolled out a selection of Christmas sausage rolls. After a brief deliberation, I opted for one filled with pigs in blankets, stuffing and an apple and pear chutney. With flavours this big and consistently excellent service, I fear that won’t be my last Christmas sausage roll.
Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?
Neatly lined up inside a glass case. The Christmas decorations were up in the shop window and inside was a beehive of activity.
How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?
£3 for a rustic looking rascal.
Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?
Packaged on a paper plate and wrapped in a paper bag. The bag was neatly rolled over to retain the heat. A nice touch.
Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?
A decent heft.
Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?
It had chilled somewhat but I was offered it reheated.
Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?
Flaky goodness with a nice bit of baked cheddar on top.
7. Quality of meat or filling
Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?
Absolutely filthy filling. There were pigs in blankets, stuffing and an apple and pear chutney.
Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?
Bags of flavour, the chutney really made this something special and the stuffing was something new and exciting.
Were you left satisfied or wanting more?
I was happy afterwards but regretted only buying one.
10. Bonus Points
Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?
Top service as ever, they are wonderfully friendly in there and I wish I lived closer.
