BROR Specialkaffehus Pork & Fennel Sausage Roll Review

BROR Specialkaffehus Sausage Roll

About BROR Specialkaffehus

Myself and fennel have history. Previously, on a trip to Brod + Wolf, too much of the stuff and not enough pork, left me with the bitter taste of disappointment. In life, as with sausage rolls, you have to be prepared to confront negative experiences, leaving room for reappraisal.

This afternoon, I had no need and little desire for a sausage roll. I’d already eaten three from M&S on the train from London to Brighton and rather hated myself. My plan was to head straight home to eat a vegetable but my wife was out with my mother and my son and suggested coffee. I met them at Seven Dials, just as the rain began to fall and we walked to BROR Specialkaffehus for shelter. A passer-by could be mistaken for thinking that this was a furniture shop or an art installation but instead, it’s a coffee shop serving drinks from complicated contraptions, alongside delicious snacks. It’s worth a visit because the atmosphere is calm, the staff are welcoming and the sausage rolls delicious enough to force me to rethink my judgement of fennel.

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage rolls were displayed on small wooden boards behind the counter. There were vegan and meat varieties and for once, I was tempted to branch out and try the plant-based kind.

9/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£3.50 felt fair considering that I was sitting in to shelter from the elements. The atmosphere alone justified the price; it was calm and welcoming.

7/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

Top marks for presentation. The sausage roll was heated and came delivered on a plate along with cutlery and napkins.

10/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The roll was reassuringly dense and there was a decent pork to pastry ratio.

9/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

Upon arrival, the sausage roll was heated to the perfect temperature. It looked as if it was heated in a panini oven, as the top of the roll had char lines.

10/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry was flaky and encased the filling. Personally, I prefer a more buttery pastry but it was perfectly pleasant.

8/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

The meaty filling was excellent, nicely ground and with no gristle.

8/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

The fennel was subtle and added something extra to the sausage roll. As always, I would have liked more pepper or the offer of English mustard.

8/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I was pleasantly surprised, although I came away feeling guilty and in need of a run.

10/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

Bonus points for the immaculately clean toilet and the decent hand soap. BROR Specialkaffehus is the kind of place that I could happily hang out in all day. The coffee was great, the food tasty and the there was a quiet calm that is missing from some places.
