Brod + Wolf sausage roll review

Brod + Wolf sausage roll

About Brod + Wolf

Brod + Wolf is a fancy coffee shop on Church Road in Hove. Inside, the shop looks like a furniture magazine with walls painted the same colour as my living room, oversized light fixtures, plants and comfortable chairs to calm the patrons. The coffee is excellent but the sausage rolls left much to be desired.

Address

123 Church Rd, Hove BN3 2AF

1. Appearance

Did the sausage roll look appetising? Was it lovingly displayed in the shop window?

The sausage roll was sat on a shelf against the back wall of the shop. Unlike the cakes, they were not displayed in the main counter case. There were vegan sausage rolls along with pork and fennel on offer.

4/10

2. Price

How much did you pay for it? Was it good value for money?

£3.50 felt like a lot for a small sausage roll that was slightly burnt and dry.

2/10

3. Packaging

Was it carefully wrapped? Did it arrive home intact?

The sausage roll was packaged in a brown paper bag. No grease transferred onto the packaging and I could fit the sausage roll in my pocket for the walk home.

6/10

4. Weight

Did it have a satisfying weight? Was it reassuringly dense?

The sausage roll was small and compact but it wasn’t as dense as I might have liked. I suspected that the fennel to pork ratio was skewed in favour of the fennel.

4/10

5. Warmth

Was it warm and ready to eat or cold on arrival?

The sausage roll was stone cold. I suspected that it had sat on the side in the shop for hours.

1/10

6. Pastry

Was it buttery and flaky? Did it hold together?

The pastry was dry and burned on the bottom. It wasn’t a total travesty but lacked the buttery quality of good pastry.

3/10

7. Quality of meat or filling

Was the filling substantial or did you mainly chew air?

As suspected, the filling was mostly fennel. There was pork in there too but it was overpowered by the fennel, which was undercooked and crunchy.

3/10

8. Flavour

Was the sausage roll delicious and well-seasoned?

I felt like the sausage roll filling could have done with more seasoning. Some heat from black pepper could have helped the overall flavour.

4/10

9. Satisfaction

Were you left satisfied or wanting more?

I ate all of the pastry but scraped some of the filling into the bin. This was not a satisfying sausage roll, mostly due to the lack warmth and flavour. The fennel was overpowering and needed more cooking.

3/10

10. Bonus Points

Did anything warrant bonus points? Eg. a little pot of mustard or friendly service from the staff?

The shop was very pretty but the sausage roll was a let down.
